First-Gen MSBA Students Share Their Stories

A first-generation student at UC Davis Graduate School of Management is a trailblazer, being the first in their family to pursue a graduate degree. With exceptional resilience, fresh perspectives, and a deep commitment to growth, these students embody the transformative power of education, paving the way for personal and professional success through their graduate studies.

As a first-generation graduate student myself, I've met several other first-gen students in the UC Davis Master of Science in Business Analytics program and asked them to share about their experiences as they break barriers and inspire future generations.

What inspired you to pursue a career in data analytics?

My mom always emphasized the importance of financial independence. It wasn't just about earning a paycheck, it was about breaking a cycle. I wanted a career that challenged my intellectuality and allowed me to make a real impact. My love for mathematics was my guiding star. - Sonia Kashyap MSBA 25

What does representation in higher education mean to you?

To me, representation in higher education means an active effort to provide the support and resources that any potentially disadvantaged student may need to accomplish the same goals as their peers. This is crucial in maintaining accessibility in education. - Kyle Ayisi MSBA 25

What advice would you give to other first-gen students considering grad school?

I know that many first-gen students experience moments of doubt and sometimes feel disconnected when constantly encountering new things. But these feelings are part of the journey. As long as we remain steadfast, building our lives one step at a time, we craft a world that reflects our unique vision and values. - Elsiey Hu MSBA 25

What does being a first-generation student mean to you?

Being the first in my family to complete a bachelor's degree and pursue a master's degree means that I'm paving the wave for my younger siblings.
