Why Future Graduates Should Consider a Master of Management

A crossroads: job offer or graduate school?

As my undergraduate journey at UC Davis comes to a close, one question weighed heavily on my mind: should I pursue graduate school or enter the workforce?

Then, one day during spring quarter, an email from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management introduced me to the brand-new Master of Management (MM) program. Intrigued, I reached out to the admissions team for more details. After thoughtful conversations—including one with my dad—I decided to dedicate a full week to my application and submitted it just before the final deadline.

As I waited for a decision, I explored job opportunities and applied for a role at a nonprofit in San Francisco. During finals week in June, I received an offer. The next day, after my graduation ceremony, another email arrived—one that would shape my next year: my acceptance into the MM program!

The Decision That Changed Everything

With both options on the table, I faced a challenging dilemma.

  • The job offer: Would I fit into the workplace? Was I ready to leave the structure of school life?
  • The MM program: Could this enhance my career marketability? Would I benefit from an extra year at UC Davis, growing my leadership and management skills?

Ultimately, I chose to continue my journey at UC Davis—not just to earn a master’s degree, but to be part of history as a member of the inaugural MM cohort.

From Peer Support to Leadership

Entering the program, I was immediately immersed in a tight-knit community of 29 students—many of whom were student-athletes. The camaraderie exceeded my expectations, and I quickly found myself at home.

My passion for helping others led me to run for leadership within our student organization, Associated Students of Management (ASM). In just a month, I was elected Director of Student Welfare, a role that allows me to advocate for my peers, organize wellness check-ins, and use ASM resources to support my cohort.

This experience has reinforced my belief that the UC Davis MM program is more than just a degree—it’s an opportunity to lead, grow, and make a difference.
