The UC Davis Graduate School of Management recently hosted a live Q&A session featuring Alex Svensson, director of recruitment and admissions, and Gerard Bañales, associate director of admissions and recruitment.
This session provided valuable insights into the school's Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Management (MM) programs, covering key differences, admission requirements, program formats, student life and financial aid options.

What is the difference between an MBA and Master of Management?
Our graduate programs include the MBA and MM programs. While both degrees prepare you for various business industries and functional areas, there are key differences:

What is a good undergrad GPA to apply for your MBA or Master of Management?
It depends on the program to which you are applying. We recommend a minimum GPA of 3.0, but to be competitive, aim for a higher score. For the Full-Time MBA, a GPA closer to 3.4 is ideal. For the Part-Time MBA and Master of Management, aim for a GPA around 3.2.
How long does the program take?
- The Full-Time MBA program is a two-year, in-person program at the Davis campus that begins in August.
- The Part-Time MBA program takes 24 to 28 months to complete and follows a hybrid format, with in-person sessions in Sacramento and San Ramon.
- The Master of Management program is a nine-month, in-person program at the Davis campus with a fall start. An online option is available, extending the program to 18 months.
Who hires MBA or MM graduates?
Everyone! The great thing about the MM degree is that it will give you broad introductory business knowledge that will strengthen your application many entry level positions in any industry. According to the 2024 GMAC corporate recruiters survey, more than 65% of corporate recruiters in the US plan to hire MM graduates.
What classes should I take as an undergrad?
When applying to our MBA or MM programs, there are no specific courses that you're required to take in order to apply from an undergraduate degree. I think what we really look for is your ability to handle the quantitative nature of our STEM-designated programs. The admissions committee closely evaluates candidates' quantitative coursework performance and volume to ensure that students can handle the rigorous curriculum.
I have never been to UC Davis! Do you offer tours?
The school encourages prospective students to visit campus through various opportunities, including class visits, small group tours and Friday immersion program experiences. These options are available across all of our Northern California campuses, and interested candidates can go to our GSM events calendar page to find a class visit that is nearest to you.
Do I have to have work experience?
The MM program doesn't require formal work experience but values strong internships, volunteer work or early career experience. The Full-Time MBA program typically seeks candidates with five to six years of experience, while the Part-Time MBA program prefers six to eight years, though both require a minimum of two years of work experience.
What's the difference between a Part-Time and Full-Time MBA?
UC Davis offers several MBA format options to accommodate different student needs.
- The Full-Time MBA is a two-year program based in Davis, California, with classes typically running Monday through Thursday, plus additional activities like assignments and club meetings.
- The Part-Time MBA program, available in Sacramento or San Ramon, offers a hybrid format with virtual weeknight classes and in-person sessions every other Saturday. Both formats maintain the same requirements and STEM-designation.
- An Online MBA option is also available.
What do you look for in applicants?
The admissions committee takes a holistic approach to evaluating candidates, considering academic potential, professional experience, and personal qualities that would contribute to the classroom dynamic. Decisions typically take four to six weeks after receiving a completed application.

What career services do you offer?
We place a huge focus on career support services! We'll be working with you even before orientation to get your resume and cover letter updated and to do mock interviews. There are also a number of resources available at the GSM and UC Davis to access career fairs and employers.

How long does it take to review an application?
Our committee typically takes four to six weeks to review a completed application. Before starting your application, ensure you have all required files ready for submission. Once everything is prepared, submit your application.
Are scholarships available?
We want to make this as easy as possible for you! Regarding financial support, the school offers merit-based scholarships that don't require a separate application. Scholarship decisions are included with admission notifications. Students can also explore other funding options such as loans, employer sponsorship and personal savings.
What is student life like?
Student life at UC Davis GSM is rich and varied. In the classroom, students work on case studies and projects, demonstrating their skills and contributing to discussions. Outside the classroom, they can participate in student clubs, sporting events and outdoor activities. All students, regardless of their primary campus location, have access to the Davis campus community.
How long is the OPT for the MBA program?
For international students, both the Full-Time MBA and MM programs are STEM-designated, making graduates eligible for up to three years of OPT.
